Ⅰ. Chemical properties and molecular structure
Phenyltrimethoxysilane ( C₉H₁₄O₃Si ) is a phenyl-containing organic silane coupling agent. Its molecular structure consists of a phenyl group ( C₆H₅- ) and three methoxy groups ( -OCH₃ ). It has both organic hydrophobicity and inorganic reactivity. The core properties are as follows:
Hydrolysis activity: Methoxy groups hydrolyze in water to generate silanol (-Si-OH), which condenses with inorganic surface hydroxyl groups;
Strong hydrophobicity: phenyl groups impart high contact angles (>110°) and surface energies as low as 20 mN/m;
Thermal stability: decomposition temperature> 300℃ (TGA test), excellent high temperature resistance;
Adjustable refractive index: 1.485–1.495, suitable for optical material modification.
Physicochemical parameters:
parameter | Numeric |
Molecular weight | 198.29 g/mol |
Density (25℃) | 1.07–1.10 g/cm³ |
Boiling Point | 230–235°C |
Flash point | 98℃ (closed cup) |
Solubility | Soluble in ethanol and acetone, insoluble in water |
Ⅱ. Synthesis process and preparation technology
Phenyltrimethoxysilane is mainly prepared by the alcoholysis reaction of phenyltrichlorosilane:
Reaction equation:
C₆H₅SiCl₃ + 3CH₃OH → C₆H₅Si(OCH₃)₃ + 3HCl↑
C₆H₅SiCl₃ + 3CH₃OH → C₆H₅Si(OCH₃)₃ + 3HCl↑
Process conditions:
Catalyst: Ammonia or organic amine (such as triethylamine), neutralize the generated HCl;
Temperature: 40–60°C (to avoid side reactions);
Solvent: Toluene or n-hexane, to improve the uniformity of the reaction.
Purification technology:
Low-boiling substances (such as methanol and HCl) are removed by vacuum distillation, with a purity of more than 99%;
The molecular sieve absorbs residual moisture (control H2O < 50ppm).
Green process innovation:
Ionic liquid catalysis: Use [BMIM]Cl ionic liquid to reduce waste acid emissions;
Continuous flow synthesis: reaction time is shortened to 2 hours and yield is increased to 95%.
Ⅲ. Core advantages of phenyltrimethoxysilane
Phenyltrimethoxysilane is popular because of its following significant advantages:
Excellent hydrophobicity: The introduction of phenyl groups gives it excellent hydrophobic properties, which can effectively reduce the water absorption rate of the material surface, improve the product's water resistance, corrosion resistance and freeze-thaw resistance, and extend its service life.
Enhanced Weathering Resistance: The phenyl structure can absorb ultraviolet rays and reduce the damage of ultraviolet rays to the material, thereby improving the weathering resistance of the material and enabling it to maintain good performance in outdoor environments.
Improved compatibility: Phenyl can improve its compatibility with organic resins, enabling it to be better dispersed in the polymer matrix and improving the mechanical properties and processing properties of the material.
Improved heat resistance: The introduction of phenyl groups enhances the stability of its molecular structure, enabling it to withstand higher temperatures and maintain good performance.
Enhanced Adhesion: Phenyltrimethoxysilane can enhance the adhesion between different materials, such as the adhesion between organic polymers and inorganic fillers, thereby improving the overall performance of the composite material.
Excellent anti-pollution property: The hydrophobic surface can effectively prevent the adhesion of pollutants on the surface of the material, keeping the surface of the material clean and beautiful.
Ⅳ. With its excellent performance, phenyltrimethoxysilane is widely used in the following fields:
Coatings industry: As a coating additive, it improves the weather resistance, hydrophobicity, corrosion resistance of the coating, improves the adhesion of the coating film, and extends the service life of the coating. It is especially suitable for outdoor architectural coatings, ship coatings, automotive coatings, etc.
Plastic and rubber industry: As a modifier for plastics and rubber, it can improve their mechanical properties, heat resistance, weather resistance and processing properties. For example, it can improve the tensile strength and impact strength of plastics, and improve the wear resistance and aging resistance of rubber .
Adhesive industry: As an additive for adhesives, it improves the bonding strength, water resistance, and heat resistance of adhesives, and enhances the bonding between different materials. It is suitable for packaging electronic components, bonding of building materials, etc.
Glass fiber treatment agent: used for surface treatment of glass fiber, to improve the bonding force between glass fiber and resin matrix, and to improve the mechanical properties and water resistance of composite materials.
Stone protective agent: As a stone protective agent, it improves the hydrophobicity and stain resistance of the stone, prevents moisture and pollutants from penetrating into the interior of the stone, and protects the stone from weathering and erosion.
Electronics industry: used for packaging and protection of electronic components to improve their moisture resistance, insulation and reliability.
Textile industry: As a textile treatment agent, it can make textiles hydrophobic, wrinkle-resistant and stain-resistant, and improve the comfort and durability of textiles.
Ⅴ. Major manufacturers
International giants:
Momentive: high-purity electronic-grade products (metal impurities <1ppm);
Wacker: Focus on silicone rubber applications and customized modification solutions.
Domestic leader:
